Biography

On 9 October 2026, three stumbling stones were laid for communists that were part of the resistance: Johann Riemer, Karl Riemer and Leo Eichmüller. The men were friends during their incarceration in Dachau Concentration Camp. Initiator of the laying was Ines Eichmüller, the great-niece of Leo Eichmüller. All three survived Dachau.

Leonhard (Leo) Eichmüller was born on 31 July 1884 in Oberdachstetten near Ansbach, as the son of Marie Margarete Eichmüller and Friedrich Reichert. His father was a stone cutter. Leo worked as a stoker.

On 26 December 1909, he married Babette Reiß. She was born on 2 March 1886 in Forchheim, as the daughter of Wilhelm and Barbara Reiß, née Struppel.

The couple had two daughters: Elise, born on 22 October 1910, and Luise, born on 13 July 1920, both in Nuremberg. The family moved into the house at Theatergasse 7 on 27 July 1927.

Leo Eichmüller was a member of the Communist Party of Germany. He was arrested immediately after the „Gleichschaltung“ (forced political conformity) of Bavaria on 8 March 1933, in the first wave of arrests of political opponents on 14 März 1933. On 13 April 1933, he was delivered as Prisoner Nr 50 to the newly-founded Dachau Concentration Camp. He spent more than 12 years there and in the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp. He was friends with the brothers Karl and Johann Riemer in Dachau.

As leader of a trash disposal troop, Leo Eichmüller helped several prisoners escape Dachau in April 1945. Among them was Karl Riemer, who forced his way through to the approaching American troops and informed them about the conditions in the concentration camp. Whether Riemer’s report expedited the liberation of the camp is the subject of historical dispute.

After 1945, Leo Eichmüller served as a witness in the Dachau Trials of the US Army. He kept in active contact with his fellow former prisoners.

Leo died on 8 February 1975, two months before the ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau.
