Biography
On 30 April 2025, two stumbling stones were laid for Josef and Clementine Hirsch. The initiative came from local historian Stefan Polster from Frankenwinheim. On 10 September 1942, Josef and Clementine were deported to Theresienstadt and murdered there.
Josef Hirsch was born on 24 May 1869 in Frankenwinheim in Lower Franconia. His parents were Simon and Sofie (née Kleemann) Hirsch. He became a grain merchant like his father and moved in 1896 to Nuremberg. Josef was a valued hop trader, who, together with his cousin, led the flourishing company “Gebrüder Hirsch”.
On 29 August 1897, he married Clementine Goldstein from Fürth in her hometown. She was born there on 3 January 1875 as the daughter of Isaac Goldstein and his wife Sabine (née Steinlein). The couple had two sons: Ludwig (born on 13 September 1898) and Willy (born on 19 November 1903). The family lived at Bayreuther Straße 6.
Ludwig, who studied law in Munich, volunteered for service in the First World War when he was 18 and died on the battlefield on 4 October 1918. Willy received a doctorate in economics and last worked in Germany for the Jewish-owned Bankhaus Warburg in Hamburg. From there he emigrated in 1938 with his wife Ilse Elisabeth and son John to the USA.
On 10 September 1942, Josef and Clementine were deported to Theresienstadt and murdered; Clementine on 31 December 1942 and Josef on 10 February 1944.
