Statement from the project seminar, July 2021

My decision to take part in the seminar was the result of my interest in history, especially Germany’s darkest epoch, the period of National Socialism. I am always shocked when I look back on this time. The lives and thoughts of the people in those days are enormously important. They should not be forgotten.

What made the biggest impression on me during the seminar was the work on the files, which involved a lot of effort and time. Also, the laying of the stumbling stones was very beautiful and emotional.

I find the idea of stumbling stones, as a way of preserving memories, very good. Something perpetual has been created, directing the attention of all sorts of different people to a theme which is not addressed every day.

Laying the stumbling stones with Gunter Demnig was a beautiful life-experience. He radiates a very strong aura but is nevertheless a very calm, quiet person. It was fun to watch him work so skilfully and to learn from him. In addition, I hope next year to be present at another laying of stumbling stones in Nuremberg and in Fürth.

The importance of remembering and commemorating the victims of National Socialism must be conveyed to others. Only those who remember can strive to ensure that such a terrible thing never happens again.
