The property at Uhlandstraße 15 is circled in red. The house is missing on this photo, as it was first built in 1931. At the top of the picture the Uhlandschule is visible. To the south, the Meuschelstrasse runs from west to east (here from left to right) through the picture. After it crosses the Krelingstrasse, the Oberfinanzdirektion Nuremberg (regional finance office) can be seen. Aerial photo 1927.

Rudolf Gärtner was born on 14 April 1908 in Nuremberg as the son of business man Siegfried Gärtner and his wife Frau Anna (née Hamburger). Rudolf was trained in business and worked in his father’s company, the Vereinigte Herd- und Ofenfabriken Gärtner & Co.

On 4 January 1932, he married Hilde Bella Weilheimer. Hilde was born on 15 September 1911 in Nuremberg as the daughter of Martin Weilheimer and his wife Ida (née Seidenberger). Rudolf and Hilde lived at Uhlandstraße 15. There they had a child: Erich Siegfried, born on 8 September 1935 in Fürth.

On 15 Oktober 1938, the Gärtner family fled to the USA. They arrived on Kristallnacht (8 November 1938) in New York City and moved on to Los Angeles. There they changed their name to Gardner; Rudolf became Ralph. Erich died there in 1943 in an accident.
